The UK and Ukraine have agreed to provide a £2.26 billion loan for Ukraine's defence sector, Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko has confirmed. The loan is intended to boost Ukraine's military strength to build a stronger defence against Russian aggression.
Marchenko said the loan was secured by frozen Russian assets. He said the assistance was crucial for Ukraine and he was grateful to the UK for holding Russia responsible for the war and helping to hold the aggressor accountable internationally.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, UK Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves discussed the issue in a video call. The UK government's assistance is being seen as a significant step for Ukraine.
This loan is considered a major support for Ukraine, which is crucial to increasing its military preparedness and ability to continue fighting against Russia.
