Trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan has resumed. This is the first time since 1971 that direct government-to-government trade has begun. A Pakistani ship carrying 25,000 tonnes of rice has set off for Bangladesh as per a government-to-government (G2G) agreement.
This information was reported in a report by the Pakistani media outlet The Express Tribune on Saturday.
The report said that this is the first time that a government-approved cargo ship has left Karachi's Port Qasim for Bangladesh. This is a historic step for bilateral trade. Bangladesh has agreed to buy a total of 50,000 tonnes of rice from Pakistan. This rice will be supplied through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). The deal was finalized in early February this year.
The rice export process will be completed in two phases. The first shipment of 25,000 tons of rice is currently on its way to Bangladesh. The remaining 25,000 tons of rice are planned to be sent in early March.
The report also said that for the first time, a ship of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) will dock at a Bangladeshi port carrying government cargo. This is an important milestone in bilateral maritime trade relations.
