A powerful earthquake has struck central and eastern Nepal. The earthquake struck at 2:51 am (Nepal local time) on Thursday night. Its magnitude was 6.1 on the Richter scale. Tremors were also felt in areas around Patna and Bihar in India, as well as Nepal.
NDTV reported this information in a report on Friday.
The report said that the epicenter of the earthquake was Bhairabkunda in Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal. The epicenter was at least 10 kilometers deep. No damage was initially reported.
Nepal's earthquake monitoring and research agency reported the quake's magnitude as 6.1, while the German Research Center for Geosciences reported it as 5.6. India's National Center for Seismology and the United States Geological Survey reported the quake as 5.5.
It is reported that the tremors were felt most strongly along the Nepal-Tibet border. Many local residents came out of their homes in panic.
Nepal is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Geographically, the country falls between 'seismic zones' 4 and 5. An area falling into 'seismic zone 5' means that it is most likely to experience earthquakes. These zones are divided depending on the probability of an earthquake in a given area. In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal killed more than 9,000 people. Many houses and structures collapsed. Since then, Nepal has experienced several small or moderate earthquakes.
