The invitation was extended by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a meeting with Trump at the White House.
In the letter, King Charles noted that it would provide an opportunity to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest and would also be important in planning the historic second state visit.
He added, "As you know, this is unprecedented for a US president. That's why I think it's important for us to sit down together and discuss the location and schedule of the visit. Working together, we can further strengthen the special relationship that exists between our two countries, which is a source of pride for both of us."
At the end of the letter, the king signed: “Yours Most Sincerely, Charles”
Donald Trump has expressed his excitement at accepting the invitation and cited his familiarity with the UK. The exact date of the visit has not yet been announced, but it is seen as a symbol of the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Until now, second-term US presidents have not been invited to a state visit. They usually receive tea or lunch with the royal family at Windsor Castle. But King Charles III has made an exception and offered Donald Trump a historic second state visit.
The letter mentions two alternative locations for the talks—Dumfries House or Balmoral, both in Scotland. Trump has family connections to Scotland, as his mother was born and raised on the Hebridean island of Lewis. Trump himself has business investments in Scotland and is set to open a new golf course in Aberdeenshire this year, named after his mother.
Trump showed his invitation to the camera and jokingly said that he had to verify if the signature was genuine!
The main point of the letter:
"This will provide an opportunity to discuss various issues of mutual interest and at the same time, it will provide an opportunity to plan a historic second state visit."
"As you know, this is unprecedented for a US president. So I think we need to sit down together and discuss the location and program of the visit."
"By working together in this way, we can further strengthen the special relationship that exists between our two countries, which is a matter of pride for both of us."
Trump and British Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer After the invitation, they held a joint press conference, where Trump did most of the talking.
Ukraine-Russia War and Treaty Negotiations
Another important purpose of the visit was to discuss a possible peace deal for the Ukraine-Russia war. Keir Starmer said that Russian President Vladimir Putin could invade Ukraine again in the future if the United States cannot provide adequate security guarantees.
Trump responded by saying the United States would work in Ukraine and provide a “backstop” through agreements on key mineral resources.
However, Trump has faced challenges for some controversial comments. When asked why he called Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator, Trump replied:
“What did I say? I can’t believe I said that. Next question.”
The UK is currently negotiating the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, but this is not possible without the support of the US.
Trump said: “We will discuss this soon, and I think it will be resolved well.”
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy later confirmed in an interview that the Chagos Islands agreement would not be implemented without US support.
The visit is being seen as an opportunity to further strengthen UK-US relations and increase mutual understanding between Trump and Keir Starmer.
