A man was hacked to death by rival gangs in Ghoraghat Upazila of Dinajpur over a land dispute. The incident took place at 3 pm on Friday (February 7) in Shahpara area of Bulakipur Union.
The deceased was identified as Matiar Rahman (50), son of the deceased Korban Ali of Sonamukhi area of the same union. Police arrested the main accused Babul Akhter Babul Chowdhury (65) within an hour for his involvement in the incident.
It was learned from local people and the police that Babul Chowdhury was in a dispute with Anwar Hossain of the same village over 50 percent of the land. On that afternoon, Anwar Hossain, along with his father-in-law Matiar Rahman, went to plant rice on that land. On receiving the news, Bablu Chowdhury and his three sons, along with some others, arrived at the scene and started beating Matiar Rahman. As a result, Matiar Rahman suffered injuries below the knees of both legs and started bleeding excessively.
Locals took the seriously injured Motiar to the Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Ghoraghat Police Station OC Nazmul Haque said preparations are underway to file a murder case in the incident. The main accused was arrested within an hour of the murder. A drive is underway to arrest the remaining accused.
