On February 5, the banned organization Chhatra League took out a few quick processions in Chittagong city, sparking a political uproar. The Chittagong Metropolitan Police launched a massive crackdown in Chittagong city.
Police have arrested 16 leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League and the banned organization Chhatra League at various police stations in Chittagong city in the past 24 hours. They were arrested during a drive from 2 pm on Thursday (February 6) to 2 pm on Friday (February 7).
The arrested are: Md. Akhtar Hossain Prakash Akhtar Company (48), Bijoy Dey (25), Md. Siddique Munshi (41), Jabed Uddin Chowdhury Prakash Saju (39), Sheikh Russell (40), Ratan Ghosh (48), Dr. Kathak Das (40), Md. Nazmul Hasan (19), Sushant Das Debu (25), Sourav Kumar Dey Prakash Basu (45), Md. Hiron Mia (68), Md. Parvez Khan Prince (34), Md. Safi Alam Sawdagar (40), Sheikh Abdul Shukkur (58), Md. Riazul Islam (21) and Golam Nabi Prakash Emon (36).
Mahmuda Begum, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) of the Media and Public Relations Department of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter.
He said, "16 people have been arrested from various police stations in Chittagong city under the Special Powers and Anti-Terrorism Acts, including for attacks on students and the public during the July anti-discrimination student movement. Operations are underway to secure the city."
