Afghan rights activist Arash Azizada, who is an organizer with the group “Afghans for a Better Tomorrow,” said that US foreign policy has long abandoned allies, while initially promising them support.
In a statement to Al Jazeera, she compared the current situation in Ukraine to the experience in Afghanistan. "What Trump is doing to the people of Ukraine, he did to us in his first term," Azizada said. "He befriended the Taliban, ignored Afghan leaders and women, and signed a deal that brought the Taliban back to power, at the expense of the Afghan people."
He added, “This is a repeat of the abandonment and betrayal we experienced in 2017, which we also saw during the Biden administration.”
Azizada also said that US foreign policy has repeatedly failed its allies, especially when those allies have cooperated with America's larger goals and interests. He described the current US behavior as a repeat of the previous Afghan situation, where the agreement signed to bring the Taliban to power in Afghanistan posed a danger to the Afghan people.
In addition, Azizada said that the situation in Ukraine and the experience in Afghanistan are similar to each other, as both countries have suffered from US violations of promises. While Trump's behavior against Ukraine has caused continued concern, the Afghan people have also expressed deep disappointment with the US government's role in resolving Afghanistan's internal problems and establishing peace.
Azizada says the US's treatment of the Ukrainian people has created a new phase of abandonment and is raising a big question mark over the US's credibility around the world.
