Balla Land Port in Habiganj, Sylhet Division is being closed. It has been recommended to declare 6 unprofitable and inactive land ports of the Bangladesh Land Ports Authority under the Ministry of Shipping to be closed initially. The committee formed by the Ministry of Shipping to examine the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of 8 land ports of the Bangladesh Land Ports Authority has made this recommendation. Among them, there is a land port in Sylhet Division.
The committee presented its observations and recommendations to Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor on Shipping and Labor and Employment, at the meeting room of the Ministry of Shipping on Monday (February 10) afternoon.
The land ports recommended for initial closure or inactivity are Balla Land Port in Habiganj, Sylhet Division, Chilahati Land Port in Nilphamari, Daulatganj Land Port in Chuadanga, Tegamug Land Port in Rangamati, Biral Land Port in Dinajpur, and Karaitali Land Port in Mymensingh.
At the meeting, Shipping Advisor Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain said that during the previous government's tenure, various unnecessary facilities have been built, which have not brought any benefit to the state. Moreover, state money has been wasted. Two land ports have also been built at a relatively short distance in one upazila.
The Shipping Advisor said that those land ports that will be beneficial for the development of the people of the country will be kept operational.
