The death toll from paramilitary shelling in the African country of Sudan has risen to 56. Several more were injured in the incident. It is believed that the death toll may rise further. Al Jazeera reports.
The incident took place in the Omdurman market in the capital Khartoum on Saturday (February 1). The AFP news agency reported, citing a doctor at the local Al Naw hospital, that the injured in the attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were being brought to the hospital.
Witnesses told AFP that paramilitary RSF forces opened fire from west Omdurman on civilians in the market in Omdurman, killing and wounding several people.
The shelling came a day after RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo announced the withdrawal of troops from the country's capital.
The army launched an offensive this year after months of stalemate in the capital, recapturing several key bases, including the Khartoum headquarters, from the paramilitary RSF.
The army's crackdown has driven the RSF from many of its strongholds, leading to growing anxiety and tension in the capital.
The paramilitary RSF forces have been engaged in regular fighting with the army in the country since April 2023. That year, 10,000 people were killed in a brutal conflict. More than 12 million people have been displaced by the conflict.
