Deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is suffering from terminal cancer. In this situation, she has no political hopes and aspirations. She wants to leave politics as long as she lives and earn a living. One such statement signed by Sheikh Hasina is circulating on social media. Now, the fact-checking platform Rumor Scanner has verified the authenticity of that statement.
A terminal cancer is slowly pushing me towards death. In this situation, I have no power or political aspirations.
On January 29, the Awami League announced a political program against the interim government on its official Facebook page. According to the announced program, leaflets or pamphlets will be distributed from February 1 to February 5. The party will hold protest marches and rallies on February 6, demonstration marches and rallies on February 10, blockade programs on February 16, and a nationwide all-out strike in the morning and evening on February 18.
Also, the circular signed by the banned Chhatra League president and secretary referred to Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister.
A picture of a statement titled "Emergency Notification on Strikes and Movements in February" is circulating on social media claiming to be a statement made by Sheikh Hasina. The statement reads, "Dear countrymen, you are certainly aware that I am very physically ill.
I am making it clear today that by hacking the Facebook page of the Bangladesh Awami League, people from BNP-Jamaat are spreading various provocative propaganda and leading the peace-loving leaders and activists of the Awami League towards incitement programs including strikes, blockades, which is a highly condemnable and hateful act.
I have repeatedly said that I want peace now, I want to provide a path for the afterlife. I want to say in unambiguous language that I am still the president of Bangladesh Awami League and I have no connection with these terrorist and arson programs, neither I nor my party. In this situation, I appeal to the countrymen to build mass resistance against these miscreants, arsonists and hand them over to the law enforcement agencies. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu, Long live Bangladesh.
The Rumor Scanner team's investigation revealed that the statement circulated under the title 'Urgent Notice on Rumors of Strike and Movement in February' claiming to be a statement from Sheikh Hasina is not genuine. In fact, Sheikh Hasina did not make any such statement.
At the beginning of the investigation, after monitoring the official Facebook page of the Awami League, no information was found regarding the statement discussed in the demand for Sheikh Hasina's statement.
