Students and the public have protested in Pirojpur over a speech given on social media by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled in a mass uprising. The houses of Pirojpur District Awami League President and former MP AKMA Awal and his brother Habibur Rahman Malek, former mayor of Pirojpur Municipality and vice-president of the district Awami League, were vandalized and set on fire around 1 am on Thursday.
Locals said that the protesters took out processions in different parts of the city. Then, around 1 am, a group of students gathered at the old bus stand area of Pirojpur city and took out a protest procession, went to the house of District Awami League President AKMA Awal and his brother, former mayor of Pirojpur Municipality Habibur Rahman Malek, on Parerhat Road in the city, vandalized and set it on fire.
Later, an attempt was made to vandalize and set fire to the Baleshwar Filling Station owned by former mayor and district Awami League vice-president Habibur Rahman Malek in the city's new bus stand area. During this, the crowd was heard chanting various anti-Awami League slogans.
Additional Superintendent of Police Crime and Operations Mukit Hasan Khan said, "I am in Dhaka. We have come to know about the fire at the houses of two Awami League leaders through various means."
It is worth mentioning that earlier, the banned organization Chhatra League's verified Facebook page reported that Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who is in India, would deliver a speech on social media on February 5. Then, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave a speech at 9 pm, the student crowd in Pirojpur erupted in protest. They were seen getting active just after midnight. Since the afternoon of August 5, the houses of these two leaders were set on fire five times throughout the night.
