A case has been filed under the title 'Regarding a banned party', naming six people, including former MP Mojibur Rahman Chowdhury alias Nixon, from Faridpur-4 constituency, comprising Sadarpur, Bhanga and Charbhadrasan, over the distribution of leaflets with Sheikh Hasina's picture titled 'Trust in Sheikh Hasina' in Sadarpur, Faridpur.
An unknown number of 10-12 people have been named as accused in the case. Sadarpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Md. Mamunur Rashid filed the case as the plaintiff at 3:30 pm on Monday (February 3).
The crime title in the case report is "Case related to banned party."
The brief account of the incident states that it is a crime to distribute leaflets against the government, incited by an unlawful assembly for the same purpose.
The case was filed under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 124A (prohibited party or prohibited matter), 109 (incitement) and 34 (for the same purpose) of the 1860 Penal Code.
Incidentally, Prince Chowdhury (42), a resident of Dakshin Char Bishnupur village of Char Bishnupur union in the Joy Bangla Bazar area of Char Bishnupur union of Sadarpur upazila, was beaten up by local BNP leaders and activists and handed over to the police while distributing leaflets with Sheikh Hasina's picture titled 'Trust in Sheikh Hasina' in the evening of last Sunday at around 6:15 pm. In the wake of this incident, the case was filed with Sadarpur police station a day later.
Prince Chowdhury was named as the first accused in the case. The other accused in the case filed by name are Nixon Chowdhury (46), former MP from Faridpur-4 constituency and member of the Jubo League presidium, Shahidul Islam (46), former chairman of Sadarpur Upazila Parishad and former president of Upazila Jubo League, Kazi Shafiqur Rahman (65), former chairman of Sadarpur Upazila Parishad and former general secretary of Upazila Awami League, and two Awami League workers Lokman Sheikh (42) and Habi Bepari (48).
When asked about filing a case under the heading of 'banned party', Sadarpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Mamunur Rashid, the plaintiff in the case, told Amar Desh on Tuesday evening at around 5:45 pm that since Chhatra League is a banned organization, the case has been mentioned under the heading of crime as a banned party.
SI Md. Mamunur Rashid further said that Prince Chowdhury was arrested in the case and sent to jail through the court on Monday afternoon. He said that efforts are underway to arrest other accused in the case, including the accused and the unidentified accused.
