More than one thousand (1,000) students planted 40,000 Hijal Karach trees in one day at the second largest Ramsar site of Tanguar Haor in Bangladesh.
The Sunamganj District Administration, which oversees the Tanguar Haor, said that the trees were planted to protect 83 villages surrounding the approximately 10,000 hectares of wetlands in Tahirpur and Madhanagar upazilas of Sunamganj from the waves of the haor and the water flowing upstream during the monsoon.
On Wednesday, at the initiative of the Sylhet Forest Department, in collaboration with the Sunamganj District Administration and Tahirpur Upazila Administration, students planted 40,000 Hijal and Karoch trees on 65 acres of reclaimed land in the Tanguar Haor, along with a day-long cleanliness drive in Tanguar Haor.
On that day, 1,000 students from Joypur Government Primary School, Moazzempur High School, Badaghat Public High School, Tahirpur Government High School, Tahirpur Girls' High School and College in Haor Border Tahirpur Upazila participated in the tree planting drive.
Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia, Sylhet Divisional Forest Officer Md. Humayun Kabir, Tahirpur Upazila Executive Officer (ENO) Md. Abul Hashem and school principals, social development workers, officials of environmental organizations, etc. were present.
On Friday, Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia said that students studying in educational institutions along the banks of the haor should take care of the trees whenever they get the opportunity, which is why the students have been involved in tree planting.
In addition, each Hijal Karoch tree planted will have a student's name tag attached, so that in the future, students can say, "I planted this tree next to my homestead, and it will encourage students to plant trees in their own areas," the District Administrator is hopeful.
