Md. Hamidur Rahman Limon, Crime Reporter:
Shyama Sundari is the name of a canal in Rangpur city. It is known as the 'lungs of Rangpur'. Although it is a canal, its length is 16 kilometers; its depth was more than 40 feet. The canal was dug in 1890 with the aim of getting rid of airborne diseases and eliminating waterlogging. It starts from the source of the Ghaghat River in the city's CO Bazar area and merges with the Khokhsa Ghaghat. This canal is located on the outskirts of Rangpur city like a spider's web.
Once upon a time, there was a river-like stream and flow. All the water of the metropolis flowed through this beautiful canal and fell into the Teesta River.
Shyama Sundari Canal had a glorious past. The water was clear. It also played an important role in eliminating waterlogging in the city. Just as the water of all rivers flows into the Bay of Bengal, Shyama Sundari took on the responsibility of taking the water of Rangpur city into its body. Currently, waterlogging is seen in various places in the city even after a few hours of rain. As a result of Shyama Sundari being filled, there is almost no water flow. People have now turned it into a garbage dump. Household garbage is being thrown into the canal.
The canal is filling up and shrinking day by day. This once clear water canal is now worse than a nightmare. People are afraid to bathe in it, and it is difficult to breathe near it. Now, the polluted water of the canal, which has turned black, and the stench of garbage and garbage have made it difficult for the people of Rangpur to even walk along it.
Not only that, this canal is now a mosquito breeding ground. As a result, the people there are at great risk of contracting airborne diseases. Especially young students of various schools in Rangpur city are at risk. Most of the people are suffering from this problem as there is thick fog covering a large part of Rangpur city. Experts say that if this canal is not serviced and maintained, Rangpur city may become uninhabitable. With the amount of garbage and garbage that people are throwing into the canal and occupying it, this canal may disappear very soon.
A canal flowing before our eyes is disappearing. The beautiful tag of the Shyama Sundari canal is very inappropriate today. Everyone
Like Shyama, he also wants to live today. He wants to take responsibility for the entire water supply of Rangpur city. Are we ready to extend our hands to fulfill his responsibility?
