Chittagong Port has shown an increase in its capacity in the first month of the year. Both import and export container handling increased in the just-expired January compared to the same period last year. The port authority hopes that this year could be a year of history for the port.
According to the Chittagong Port Authority, a total of 128,383 TEUs of export containers were handled in the just-ended month of January this year. Of which, 75,234 TEUs were containers carrying export goods and 53,149 TEUs were empty export containers.
On the other hand, in the same period last year (January 2024), the total export container handling was 112,773 TEUs. Of which, export cargo containers were 63,634 TEUs and empty export containers were 49,139 TEUs. The comparative figure shows that 15,610 TEUs more export containers were handled in January this year compared to January last year. The growth was 13.84 percent.
Similarly, along with exports, handling of import containers also increased in January. According to the estimates of Chittagong Port, the total import container handling in the just-ended month of January this year was 135,231 TEUs. Of which, import containers carrying goods were 124,39 TEUs and empty import containers were 11,192 TEUs.
On the other hand, in the same period last year (January 2024), the total import container handling volume was 119,936 TEUs. Of which, import cargo containers were 112,995 TEUs and empty export containers were 7,841 TEUs. The comparative figure shows that 15,295 TEUs more import containers were handled in January of this year compared to January of the previous year. The growth was 12.75 percent.
The port authority says that the year has started well and hopes that the handling of goods and containers will increase throughout the year. Because in addition to Chittagong Port, container handling is now also being done at Patenga Terminal. In addition, various initiatives have been taken to increase the workload at Pangaon Container Terminal. The port's report at the end of the year will be like setting a record.
