The Department of Environment has collected a fine of Tk 675,000 from 8 brick kilns in a drive in Nilphamari's Saidpur. The day-long drive was conducted in different areas of the upazila on Wednesday (February 5).
The joint initiative of the Department of Environment, Nilphamari District Office and the District Administration, Nilphamari, led the drive, led by Executive Magistrate Munna Rani Chanda of the Deputy Commissioner's Office. She was assisted as a prosecutor by Assistant Director of the Department of Environment, District Office, Md. Abdullah-Al-Mamun. At that time, a team of members of the Nilphamari Sadar Police Division and Syedpur and Nilphamari Civil Defense and Fire Service were present.
The 8 brick kilns that paid the fine are respectively Md. Atiqul Islam's M/s MBC Bricks in Mushrat Dhulia of Khatamdhupur Union of the upazila, Md. Mahabub Alam's M/s MB Bricks, Md. Ahedul Haque's M/s A Star B Bricks in the Icedhal area of Kamarpukur Union, Md. Abdur Razzak's M/s H E Bricks in the Kujipukur area, Md. Nazrul Islam's M/s A N B-2 Bricks adjacent to Kamarpukur Bazar, Md. Latiful Razzak's M/s M Z H Bricks, and Md. Saiful Iqbal's M/s RS B Bricks in the Chaumuhuni area of Bangalipur Union.
Assistant Director of the Nilphamari District Office of the Department of Environment Md. Abdullah-al-Mamun said,
A mobile operation was conducted in accordance with the Brick Manufacturing and Kiln Establishment (Control) Act, 2013 (Amended 2019). During the operation, a total fine of 6 lakh 75 thousand taka was imposed on the owners of 8 brick kilns for violating Section 5(1) of the said Act and collected. Also, during the operation, the fire burning in the kilns of the mentioned brick kilns was extinguished with water and raw bricks were destroyed by spraying water. In addition, instructions were given to collect soil from agricultural land and not to operate brick kilns.
He further said that the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Nilphamari and the Department of Environment, Nilphamari District Office will continue such drives against illegal brick kilns. Earlier, the aforementioned warnings were issued along with a fine of Tk 6 lakh from 7 brick kilns, which were conducted for 2 more days.
