Police have arrested two people involved in a "robbery" at a building in Panchlaish residential area of Chittagong city. The homeowner was injured in the incident when the robbers stabbed him.
The incident took place on the second floor of a building adjacent to Al-Hidayah International School on Road No. 1 in the Panchlaish residential area on Tuesday (February 4) afternoon.
Local sources said that the building owner is the son-in-law of the daughter of leading businessman Abul Khair. His name is Lokman Hakim. He is the former managing director of Eastern Refinery Limited.
The arrested are Bayezid and Akash. Both of them worked at that house.
It is learned that a young man who participated in the robbery used to work as a housekeeper in the building. The robbery was planned in advance. They entered the building around 11 am. At one point, hearing screams and shouting, locals called 999 after 12 pm and reported seeing blood outside the house and making noise. Meanwhile, while the three robbers were fleeing, the locals caught one of them and handed him over to the police.
Then at around 1:15 pm, police and RAB members arrived at the scene. The army also arrived at the scene at some point. At around 2:15 pm, police, RAB and army members entered the building and conducted a five-minute raid, arresting another robber and rescuing Lokman Hakim from hostage-taking.
After the operation, City Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz told reporters, "We have arrested two people so far since the incident. No one died in the incident. However, one person was injured. He is the owner of the house that was robbed."
The police commissioner said that the people who went to rob the building worked in the building, "From what I understand - they entered the house for the purpose of robbery. Our operation is continuing. Let's see if we can find anything more. Those who entered the house for the purpose of robbery used to work here (in the house). An operation has been completed. An investigation will begin, we will try to uncover more information during the investigation stage."
In response to a question from reporters, he said, "One of the robbers locked the victim in the bathroom. Then a sound grenade was thrown to rescue the victim and arrest the gang member."
When asked if the owner of the house was involved in Awami League politics, he said, "The owner of the house was injured. He has been sent to the hospital. His political affiliation is not known yet. Detailed information will be provided after the investigation."
