A young man named Apu Hossain beat and killed an elderly woman named Rahima Khatun (70) in a village in Sharsha upazila of Jessore for demanding money owed to her.
The incident took place at around 12 noon on Tuesday in Piparagachhi village of Bagachra union of the upazila. The deceased Rahima Khatun was the wife of the deceased Nabisuddin Gazi of the village. Apu Hossain (30) and his family members fled immediately after the incident.
Locals said that Mizanur Rahman, son of the deceased Rahima Khatun, used to receive money from Apu Hossain, son of Abdus Samad, a neighbor. There were often quarrels between the two families over the money owed. On the day of the incident, at noon, Rahima was on her way to the field to pick bananas for cooking when she came across Apu's house and an argument broke out between Apu and Rahima. At one point, Apu beat Rahima and threw her on the paved road, causing her to lose consciousness after hitting her head. Later, locals and family members rescued her and took her first to the Upazila Health Complex and later to Jessore 250 Shasya General Hospital, where she died.
Eyewitness Firoza Khatun said she was cooking. Hearing the commotion, she came outside and saw Apu beating Rahima. At that time, Rahima was pushed and thrown onto the paved road. She suffered a head injury and lost consciousness. Her family members came and took her to the hospital. Later, they heard that Rahima had died.
Sharsha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Hossain said he sent police to the scene after hearing the news of the murder. Legal action will be taken after receiving the report after the autopsy. No complaint has been filed with the police station yet. #
