The truck driver and helper were killed in a collision between a Dhaka-bound Ekta Express train and a truck loaded with stones in Birampur, Dinajpur on Monday.
It is learnt that the Dhaka-bound inter-city Ekta Express train leaving Panchagarh was crossing the Ghoraghat rail gate in Birampur at around 1 am on Sunday when a truck carrying stones bound for Joypurgat suddenly jumped onto the rail track. The truck carrying stones was hit by the train and twisted. The truck's helper Arif Islam (20) died on the spot and the driver Mahbub Alam (30) died after being taken to the hospital. The two deceased were residents of Bhojanpur area of Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh. Locals said that although there was a gateman at the rail gate, the gate was open before the train arrived.
Parbatipur GRP Police Station OC Fakrul Islam said, "We have received the body of one person who died in the accident and we have received information that another person has died at Dinajpur Hospital. A case will be filed regarding this accident and action will be taken against the gateman if he is negligent in his duties."
Meanwhile, the accident caused a traffic jam for several kilometers on both sides of the highway in the Birampur Railgate area from 1 am.
