A college student named Tasmia Akhtar (17) committed suicide in Bakerganj after being banned from using mobile phones.
On Saturday, 1/2/2025, around 11 pm, Tasmia Akhtar (17), daughter of Shahabuddin Khan (Shukkur) of Maheshpur village in Niymati union of the upazila, committed suicide by hanging herself after being angry with her mother for prohibiting her from using a mobile phone as an HSC examinee of Syed Afsar Ali Degree College.
When Tasmia was taken to the Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex in a dying condition, the doctors declared her dead.
According to Bakerganj Police Station sources, Tasmia lived with her parents in a rented house adjacent to Maheshpur Bazar in Niyamati Union. Her mother forbade her from using a mobile phone, so her mother Sahida Begum beat her and broke her mobile phone. After a while, Tasmia wanted to leave her house. Then Tasmia's mother locked the door of the house from the outside, then Tasmia locked the balcony door of the house from the inside, tied a veil to the grill of the ventilator and hanged herself. When her relatives saw her, they took her down from the hanging position and rushed her to the hospital, where the doctor declared Tasmia dead.
Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shafiqul Islam confirmed the death and said that a college student committed suicide by hanging himself in Niyamati Union. The body was recovered from the Upazila Health Complex and brought to the police station.
The body has been sent to Barisal Shebachim for autopsy.
