Police have arrested the former secretary of the union's Awami League in connection with the attack, vandalism, arson and petrol bomb attack on a peaceful student rally during the anti-discrimination student movement in Ghoraghat, Dinajpur.
He was arrested from the Dugdugi Bazar area of the upazila at 11 pm on Thursday (January 30). The arrested person, Faisal Ali Prodhan (40), is the former general secretary of the Awami League of Palsha Union No. 2 of the upazila.
It is known that on August 4, armed leaders and activists of various Awami League organizations attacked a peaceful gathering of students and the public at the bus stand in the city center. During this time, vehicles were vandalized, motorcycles and shops were set on fire. In addition, several petrol bombs were detonated to create panic. Several people were seriously injured in the attack.
A case was filed at the police station on August 24 in this incident, naming 40 people, as well as 70-80 unknown people as accused.
Ghoraghat Police Station OC Nazmul Haque confirmed the matter and said that the arrested person is accused of attacking, vandalizing, arson and petrol bomb attacks on protesters during the anti-discrimination student movement. He has been arrested in connection with the cases related to these incidents.
He said the arrested accused will be handed over to the court on Friday (January 31).
