Hossain Md. Adil Judge Mia, the chairman of Brahmandura Union Parishad in Shayestaganj Upazila of Habiganj and the general secretary of the Upazila Awami League, has been accused of embezzling lakhs of taka by collecting advance taxes, creating fake projects, allocating members' allowances, forging members' signature seals and showing non-existent projects.
He even used his own power to collect advance taxes from industrial establishments and fill his pockets instead of depositing them in the government treasury. And the chairman was assisted in these works by the council secretary Swajal Dutta. Making all these allegations, 10 members filed a written complaint against the chairman at the Upazila Nirbahi Officer's office on June 30, 2024, mentioning 13 allegations. At that time, using party power, the complaining member was pressured to withdraw the complaint, including threats. Later, the investigation of the complaint was suspended due to illegal interference.
The investigation officer submitted a report stating that most of the 13 allegations brought against the chairman after the fall of the Awami League government were found to be true. Meanwhile, UP Chairman Judge Mia embezzled Tk 6 lakh by collecting advance tax for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 financial years from Habiganj Industrial Park (PranRFL) under the union. He is currently absconding after being accused in multiple cases of attacks on the anti-discrimination student movement. Regarding the collection of advance tax and embezzlement of money, Union Parishad Secretary Swajal Chandra Dutta said that there is no provision for collecting advance tax.
At that time, he denied the matter of taking the money. On the same issue, Upazila Executive Officer Pallab Hom Das said, "I am aware of the matter. The money collected in advance has not been deposited in the government treasury. The chairman is absconding, legal action will be taken against him. Further investigation is underway. Everything will come out."
