Sylhet:
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sunamganj participated with students in the renovation of Tanguar Haor, the country's second largest wetland under the Ramsar project.
To protect the Haor, a sanctuary for biodiversity-rich trees, fish, and guest birds, and a border tourist center, the Tahirpur Upazila administration conducted a cleanliness drive on Wednesday with the slogan "Avoid plastic pollution, build a clean Tangua."
The Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia participated in the awareness drive along with hundreds of school students.
Every year, more than 5 lakh tourists, travel enthusiasts and students from various universities and colleges from home and abroad visit the tourism-rich Tanguar Haor on study tours. The biodiversity and environment of Tanguar Haor are being polluted by human waste including plastic, polythene, glass bottles and other waste. Everyone should be more aware of preventing all kinds of pollution. District Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia called for promoting tourism by protecting biodiversity.
Tahirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), school students, social development workers, leaders of environmental organizations, and people from the villages along the banks of Tanguar Haor participated in the campaign.
Tahirpur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Abul Hashem said that more than a hundred school students participated in the cleanliness drive on Wednesday and pledged to create a clean Tanguar Haor.
