Police have arrested former Awami League MP Chayan Islam from a flat in a five-storey building in the Matir Masjid area of Telihati Union in Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur. Police searched the house around 12:30 am on Sunday (February 9) and arrested him.
Earlier, after sensing Chayan Islam's presence in the house, students, public and local BNP leaders and activists took up positions there. Later, the police reached there and searched the house and arrested Chayan Islam from inside a fourth-floor flat.
'The arrested Chayan Islam was an Awami League dummy election MP from Sirajganj-6 constituency. He was also elected as an Awami League candidate from that constituency in the 9th National Parliament election in 2008. Earlier, he was elected as an independent candidate from that constituency for the first time in the 1998 by-election. His home is in Char Nabipur village of Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj.
His sister Marina Jahan Kabita is a former Awami League MP and a member of the party's central committee. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station. Mohammad Joynal Abedin Mandal said that Chayan Islam went into hiding after the fall of the fascist Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 in a student-public uprising.
"It is initially known that for the past few months, he has been hiding in a flat on the fourth floor of a five-story building in the Matir Masjid area of Sreepur Upazila."
Police Station OC Mohammad Joynal Abedin Mondal said, "On sensing his (Chayon Islam) location, local students, the public and BNP leaders and activists took up positions around 11:30 pm."
Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot, searched the house and arrested him and his second wife Josna Islam from a room in the fourth-floor flat.
Shahjadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aslam Ali said that after receiving the information, Shahjadpur Police Station went to Sreepur Police Station and handed over former MP Chayan Islam and his wife to Shahjadpur Police Station. Later, he was brought to Shahjadpur Police Station at 11:30 pm. They were sent to court custody today, Tuesday. There are several cases against him.
