'Operation Devil Hunt' is being conducted simultaneously across the country to improve the law and order situation in the country. As part of this So far, 14 members of the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League, including two union chairmen, have been arrested in three districts of Sylhet division.
They were arrested during raids at various locations in the department from Sunday (February 9) night to Monday (February 10) afternoon.
According to police sources, the joint operation began on Sunday night. In the operation, six people, including five members of the Awami League and its affiliates from Sylhet, three members of the Awami League from Habiganj, and two union chairmen from Sunamganj, were arrested.
Those arrested from Sylhet are: Zahed Ahmed (34), the general secretary of the Volunteer League of Ward 34 of Sylhet metropolis and son of the late Maulana Jamil Ahmed of Shahparan Bahr residential area; Abdul Jalil Talukder, an active member of the Upazila Awami League, son of Abdul Khalik of Lalarchak village of South Surma upazila; Ayan Das (27), vice-president of the central committee of the banned Chhatra League; Nayan Chanda, the literary affairs secretary of South Surma upazila of the banned Chhatra League; and Habib (25), the vice-president of the upazila of the banned Chhatra League.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Media Officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam gave this information on Monday morning. Meanwhile, three Awami League leaders have been arrested in Habiganj. They were arrested after a drive was conducted in different parts of the district on Sunday night based on secret information. The arrested Awami League leaders were sent to jail through the court on Monday afternoon.
Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station (OC) Alamgir Kabir said - A raid was conducted in Lakhai Bazar of Lakhai Upazila of the district on Sunday midnight based on a secret information. During the raid, Shah Reza Uddin Ahmed Duldul, joint general secretary of the upazila Awami League, was arrested. He is the son of Abdul Mannan of Katiyara village of Lakhai Upazila.
The OC said that in another operation, Awami League leader Sharif Uddin was arrested from Rampur in the suburbs. He is the son of Fakhrul Islam of that village. A case has been registered against them at Sadar Police Station for attacking the anti-discrimination student crowd.
Meanwhile, Kazi Obaidul Quader Helal, Joint General Secretary of the Upazila Awami League, was arrested during a raid in Kalyanpur area of Kurshi Union in Nabiganj Upazila.
The arrested person is Kazi Obaidul Quader Helal (52), son of the deceased Kazi Firoz Mia alias Kazi Razzak Mia of Kalyanpur village in Kurshi union of the upazila. A case has also been registered against him at Habiganj Sadar Police Station in connection with the attack on the anti-discrimination student crowd.
In addition, 6 people, including Abdus Sattar Mia, chairman of Shallar Union in Sunamganj, and Biswajit Chowdhury Nantu, have been arrested.
They were arrested from Shalla Sadar on Monday (February 10) morning and sent to Sunamganj District Jail.
Those arrested in Sunamganj are: Md. Shafiqul Islam (55), a member of the convening committee of Doarabazar Upazila Awami League and a resident of Barkatnagar village; Md. Jalil Mia (48), president of Ward No. 3 Awami League of Tahirpur Barodal South Union and a resident of Matikata village of Tahirpur police station; Kawsar Ahmed (28), former organizing secretary of the banned organization Chhatra League of Dirai Government College and a resident of Dauj village; and Jamal Ahmed (25), joint convener of Chhatra League of Chhatra League.
Also arrested are Abdus Sattar Mia, the acting president of the Upazila Awami League and the chairman of Shalla Union Parishad No. 04. On the other hand, Biswajit Chowdhury is the former president of Nantu Upazila Sechchhasebak League and the chairman of Bahara Union Parishad No. 03.
In this regard, Shalla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest of two union chairmen, Abdus Sattar Mia and Biswajit Chowdhury Nantu.
