Police have arrested five smugglers along with a consignment of Indian cattle (cows).
Sunamganj's Dharmapasha Police Station arrested the smugglers early Sunday morning, seizing 19 cows loaded with 4 pickup trucks.
Dharmapasha Police Station OC Mohammad Enamul Haque confirmed this information on Monday.
The arrested are Rakib, son of Faruk Miah of Aliyarpur village of Madhyanagar police station next to Dharmapasha police station, Fahim, son of Nayan Miah of Balrampur village, Rafiqul Islam, son of the deceased Shamsul Islam of the same village, Ratul Miah, son of the deceased Bhagu Miah of Alukdia village of Barhatra police station in Netrokona district, and Masud Khan, son of Ruhul Amin of Chhayhal village.
The OC said that during a special operation by the Dharmapasha Police Station adjacent to Madhyanagar Police Station, 19 Indian cattle (cows) loaded with 4 pickup trucks were seized from the custody of the five smugglers on the Paikurati Panka Road. The value of the cattle, including the seized pickup trucks, is around 36 lakh 75 thousand taka.
A case was filed under relevant sections at Dharmapasha Police Station on Sunday, naming the five arrested smugglers and six more unidentified smugglers.
On Monday, several people from the border towns of Maheshkhola, Matiraban, and Bangalvita under Madhyanagar Police Station said that recently, the Madhyanagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) arrested four smugglers along with 40 Indian cows and filed a case with the police station.
Border residents allege that smugglers, managed by some dishonest officers of the Madhyanagar Police Station, are constantly smuggling Indian liquor, marijuana, yaba, Than cloth, saris, three-piece suits, blankets, medicines, sugar, fruits, spices, cosmetics, cows, buffaloes, motorcycles, logs, and bamboo, and are constantly smuggling various goods including betel nuts, rice, fish, SIM cards, and mobile phone sets to India.
