Joypurhat District Representative:
The district farmers' group has formed a human chain in Joypurhat to protest the increase in potato storage rent for 19 cold storages.
The human chain was held at the zero point of Panchur intersection in the city at 11:30 am on Sunday (February 9).
BNP Rajshahi Divisional Co-Organizing Secretary Obaidur Rahman Chandan, District BNP Convener Golzar Rahman, Senior Joint Convener Machud Rana Pradhan, District Krishak Dal Convener Selim Reza Duke, Member Secretary Manjurul Maula Palash, District Volunteer Dal Convener Shams Matin and others spoke at the human chain demanding cancellation of the additional rent for the cold storage and restoration of the previous rent.
More than a thousand farmers of the district participated in the human chain. The potato farmers raised their demands and told the cold storage owners, 'We farmers will shed our blood if necessary, but we will not accept your unjust demands. If there is any chaos, you will have to bear the responsibility. Don't think that you will buy a side with money and 80 percent of the poor farmers of this country will be the victims. Keep your money in your account. We don't pay attention to that money, but why are you, being millionaires, reaching out like a beggar to the hard-earned money of these poor farmers, you will have to answer for it, God willing.'
At the time, the speakers said, "The price of potatoes is already low, and on top of that, the rent of cold storage has been increased unreasonably, putting farmers in a crisis. This will cause serious losses to marginal farmers, which will have an impact on the entire economy. Therefore, we demand the immediate cancellation of this decision."
