An allegation has been made that the skulls of five bodies were stolen after digging up graves in a cemetery in Singair, Manikganj.
The incident took place at the Hatni Cemetery in Jamirtta Union of the upazila on Friday night.
When news of the theft of bodies spread in the area on Saturday (February 8) morning, relatives of those buried in the cemetery and local people rushed to the cemetery within moments. At that time, the atmosphere became heavy with the tears of the relatives of the stolen bodies.
On site inspection, it was found that 5/6 graves were dug in the Hatni cemetery of the upazila. Among them, the bones of the daughter of Awlad Hossain of Hatni village were in one grave, but the skull was not found. The graves were dug and covered with soil again. About 4-5 shrouds and bones were found in one grave. It is believed that these bodies were stolen.
Local Awlad Hossain said that his daughter died 2 months ago. After her death, she was buried in the Hatni cemetery. The girl, who was only 12 years old, did not harm anyone. This morning, I received news that the body had been stolen from the cemetery. I rushed to see my daughter's grave dug up. The shroud and body parts were lying inside. The thieves had taken the head.
Another person named Nabinur Islam said, "My father died 7 months ago and was buried in this cemetery. On Saturday morning, when I received the news of the body being stolen, I came here and saw that my father's grave had been covered with soil, with bamboo on top. My father's body is not even inside the grave."
Abu Sayeed, president of the Hatni Cemetery Committee, said, "I come to visit and take care of the graves every day after the Fajr prayers. On Saturday, as soon as I entered the cemetery, I saw one grave dug. When I looked around, I saw more graves one after another, the soil was messy. That's when I informed the locals. This theft has created panic in the area.
Ranjit Saha, in-charge of the Shantipur Investigation Center, said, "We visited the scene after learning about the matter. If we receive a written complaint, legal action will be taken after investigation."
