A student at the Barisal campus of Patuakhali Science and Technology University was beaten up by a local man.
On Friday (February 7) at 12:30 pm, a local man named Mithu (35), a former Chhatra League activist, beat up an 11th batch student of the ANSVM faculty in front of the main gate of the campus. It is learned that the student was slapped on the cheek, abused in foul language and even attacked with a stick for not respecting the person.
After the matter came to light, the students of the faculty erupted in protest. In view of which, at 4.30 pm, the students held a protest march towards the Upazila square and informed the matter to the university proctor. Then, the residence of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer was surrounded and a demand for justice was made. Since the UNO was not at the residence, the OC (Investigation) of the neighboring police station Sanjit arrived to control the situation. In the face of the students' movement, the police went to the house of the accused Mithu, assuring him of a fair investigation, but did not find him.
Among the students protesting on this issue, Abdullah Al Noman Rahat, a 19th batch student of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine discipline, said, "We want an exemplary trial for this incident and an assurance that such incidents will not happen in the future. And until a fair trial is held, all academic activities at the university have been declared closed by the students."
Besides, another student of the same faculty, Shahidul Islam, said, "Some teachers have been demanding shelter from outsiders for a long time. So, first of all, this shelter practice must be stopped. Besides, outsiders must be stopped from entering the campus and security must be strengthened on our campus. For that purpose, the campus gate must be constructed as soon as possible."
Farhan Sadiq Rahat, an 11th batch student who was tortured at the time, said, "The accused Mithu physically tortured me over a trivial incident. No matter what action is taken by the university administration and the upazila administration, I want the accused Mithu to apologize in front of all the students."
To control the situation, the campus's assistant proctor, Dr. Anwar Zahid, was present and said, "The behavior of the local person with the students is very sad. A fair trial will be ensured subject to an investigation with the help of the proctoral body and the local administration."
Considering the overall safety of students, all types of outsiders have been banned from entering the campus.
