The interim government's chief adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, said that parliamentary elections could be held by the end of this year. He made the remarks in a recent exclusive interview with Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK).
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in a student uprising on August 5. Dr. Muhammad Yunus then took over the government of Bangladesh.
In the interview, the Nobel laureate economist said he wants to ensure that Bangladesh stands on its own two feet and becomes stronger. Moreover, those who are elected in the elections will have a strong foundation to work on.
Dr. Yunus said, 'When we came to power, if we talk about the situation at that time, I think we have come a long way. Because it was a devastated socio-economic-political system, judicial system.'
Regarding the elections, the chief advisor said, "The earliest time for elections could be towards the end of this year. When the elections are held, those who are elected will have a strong foundation to work on."
The Chief Advisor also spoke about the younger generation in the interview. He said, "Young people want to showcase their creative power and share it with the whole world. We have this goal in mind, let's see how we move forward."
The Chief Advisor also expressed gratitude to Japan, Bangladesh's largest development partner, in the interview.
