The nameplate of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, the only female student hall at Jagannath University (JU), has been removed in the face of student demands. It is learnt that the JU administration was forced to remove the nameplate on Thursday afternoon.
Students and the public began vandalizing Dhanmondi 32 in the capital from 8 pm on Wednesday, focusing on the speech of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a mass uprising by students and the public. At one stage, the house of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized and set on fire. At around 11 pm, a crane and excavator were brought in to demolish the house. This continued throughout the day today, Thursday. In view of this, students have been demanding on social media to change the name of the only female student hall of JOB since last Wednesday night. Later, at 1 pm, they announced to demolish the nameplate of the hall, but they withdrew the program when the administration assured them of changing the name of the hall.
In this regard, the convener of the committee formed to change the name of the hall, Treasurer Professor Dr. Sabina Sharmin, said, "When I became the provost of the hall after August 5, the students demanded a name change. Later, a few days ago, they also demanded a name change in writing. In view of this, the Vice-Chancellor has formed a committee. The students have also proposed several names, and the new name of the hall will be finalized after discussing those names in the committee meeting."
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim said that after the committee proposes the name, the new name of the student hall will be finalized by passing it through the syndicate soon.
