US President Donald Trump has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House next week, Reuters reported, citing a White House official.
Trump spoke to Modi for the second time on January 27 at the US Capitol. They discussed immigration. He also stressed the importance of India buying more US-made security equipment and a freer bilateral trade relationship.
India is a strategic partner of the United States in countering China. On the other hand, the United States is India's largest trading partner. It is keen to strengthen this trade relationship with Washington. India wants to avoid Trump's past threats of imposing high tariffs on goods imported into the United States.
Trump has already announced additional tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada since coming to power. In addition, the Modi government wants to make it easier for its citizens to obtain skilled worker visas in the United States.
