Jahangirnagar University campus has once again become heated with two sides facing off over the demand for maintaining and abolishing the pet quota. University officials and employees blockaded the administrative building today (February 4) after the authorities announced to limit the number of seats.
Therefore, in addition to the students' hunger strike demanding the abolition of quotas, the situation has become tense in the face of the mass movement of officials and employees.
A group of students sat on a hunger strike until death at around 11:30 am last Sunday, demanding the abolition of pet quotas for first-year undergraduate honors admissions at the university.
In such a situation, the authorities announced on Tuesday that they would reduce the admission opportunities to a total of 148 people, with a maximum of four per department, and limit them to 40 seats.
The matter was announced in a notice signed by six leaders, including Officers' Association President and Officer-Employees Unity Council Convener Md. Abdur Rahman Babul and Employees' Association President and Officer-Employees Unity Council Member Secretary Md. Rafiqul Islam Bakshi.
The notice said that a continuous strike has been announced from February 5 demanding the cancellation of all departmental conditions for admission to the pet quota and its continuation as before. Only emergency services will remain exempt, but if the movement deems it necessary, emergency services will be included.
