Four people, including a mother and son, were killed when a stone-laden truck and a private car collided head-on on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Unish Mile area of Osmaninagar upazila around 7:30 am on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Saima Akhter (35), a resident of Ashulia area near Savar in Dhaka, her son Ayan (7), Saima's sister Shamima Yasmin (38) and cousin Sohel Bhuiyan (40). The deceased Sohel was a resident of Mograpara village in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj. The injured were identified as Zahed Hasan (29), Sabina (37) and Sunaira (2).
Police said that Saima Akhter and her relatives left Dhaka for Sylhet in a private car on Saturday night. When the private car reached the Unish Mile area of Osmaninagar upazila in Sylhet around 7:30 am today, it collided head-on with a stone-laden truck coming from Sylhet. Everyone in the private car was seriously injured. Local people rescued them and took them to a private hospital in Osmaninagar, where doctors declared Saima Akhter and Ayan dead. Injured Shamima Yasmin and Sohel Bhuiyan were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Later, they were also declared dead by the doctor on duty at Osmani Medical.
Sherpur Highway Police Station OC Abu Taher Dewan said the bodies of the deceased mother and son are at a hospital in Osmaninagar Upazila. The bodies of the remaining two have been kept at the Osmani Medical College morgue. He said the private car and truck have been seized from the scene. However, the truck driver fled.
