BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed his fear that the longer the discussion on the reform proposal drags on, the more the country will be in crisis. He said, if we continue to prolong the discussion on the reform, then the dictatorship that has been ousted by people of all classes and professions, regardless of party or opinion, will get a chance. They will again sit on the shoulders of the people of the country. Therefore, the wise and respected people who are talking about reforms, please do not prolong this discussion. This will give conspirators an opportunity to conspire.
He made these remarks while highlighting the current situation of the country at a workshop organized by Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP on Sunday afternoon. A training workshop titled '31 points for repairing the state structure and public engagement' was held at the Balur ground of Kadamtali, Shyampur, at the initiative of Dhaka Metropolitan South. The chief guest Tarique Rahman joined the workshop virtually from London. Several thousand leaders and activists of 11 BNP organizations including 24 police stations of Dhaka Metropolitan South participated in the workshop.
Tarique Rahman said, if the reform proposals are to be implemented, then elections are necessary first. Only those to whom the people give responsibility through elections can start the work of reforms, they must start. The work of implementing reforms must start through elected representatives. Because, those who are elected will promise the people that they will implement all these reforms if they get the opportunity.
He said, "The faster the reforms can be implemented, the faster we can protect the people of the country from danger. No matter what the reform proposal that the BNP has made, the reform proposal that the commissions of the interim government have prepared, there is no other way to implement these reform proposals except through elections. There is only one way, the people's election, the people's election."
Tarique Rahman said, for accountability, elections must be held at a certain time, be it national elections or any election. If we want to change the fate of the country, if we want to start working on changing the fate of the people, then we must go through an election process. We have to start working on the democratic process. The sooner we start working on the democratic process, the sooner we will be able to start the work of change. The sooner we can hand over responsibility to an elected government through the democratic process, the sooner we will be able to save the country from further destruction.
Tarique Rahman said, I think that accountability to the people can be ensured through elections. Everyone should understand this. Some people say that will all problems be solved after the elections? I say, not all problems will be solved immediately. But if there is an election, through the people's vote, through the people's verdict, the knots of problems can be slowly untied through the parties, individuals or those who get the opportunity to run the country.
He said, we want to bring about qualitative changes in politics. Not only the party, but such efforts will be made within the party in stages. At the same time, if there is an opportunity in running the state, then we want to bring it in an overall manner. For this, we seek the cooperation of every person in the society, regardless of party or opinion. At the same time, not everything will be done by just bringing about qualitative changes in politics. How many real issues remain, what are those issues? The unbridled pace of commodity prices. This pace needs to be reined in. Steps must be taken for this.
The workshop, chaired by Dhaka Metropolitan South convener Rafiqul Alam Majnu and moderated by member secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, was attended by BNP's Commerce Affairs Secretary Salahuddin Ahmed, acting chairman's advisor Mahadi Amin, executive committee member Abdus Sattar Patwary, South joint convener ANM Saiful Islam, Liton Mahmud, Abdus Sattar, K Sikandar Qadir and others.
