A memorial meeting was held in Durgapur, Netrakona, to mark the first death anniversary of Durga Prasad Tewari, an eyewitness to the Tonk movement, an anti-dictatorship, a jailed leader and former convener of the Mani Singha Celebration Committee. The memorial meeting was organized by the Mani Singha Mela Celebration Committee at the Mani Singha Memorial Museum Hallroom on Saturday afternoon.
At the beginning of the memorial service, a minute of silence was observed after paying tribute by placing flowers at the portrait of this great leader.
The memorial meeting was presided over by Upazila CPB President and Fair Celebration Committee Coordinator Alkas Uddin Mir and moderated by Upazila CPB General Secretary and Fair Celebration Committee member Rupan Kumar Sarkar. Comrade Mani Singha, Convener of the Fair Celebration Committee and CPB central leader Dr. Dibalok Singha, Committee Leader of the Fair Celebration Committee and Brave Freedom Fighter Abdul Khalek, Upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener and Fair Celebration Committee Leader Md. Rafiqul Islam, General Secretary of Durgapur Press Club Masum Billah, Fair Committee Leader Advocate Manesh Chandra Saha, Morshed Alam, Poet Lokanta Shaon, Poet Bidyut Sarkar, Durga Prasad Tewari's daughter Ranjana Tewari, Students Union President Noor Alam Khan, Tribal Leader Nirantor Banwari, among others, spoke at the meeting.
Remembering this great leader, the speakers said, Durga Prasad Tewari was one of the leaders of the anti-British struggle, military ruler and anti-dictatorship struggle. Starting from the Tonk and Tebhaga movements, this leader played a unique role in the struggle to establish the rights of neglected indigenous people including Garo-Hajong. Through the movement against military rule and dictatorship, he gained the respect of people from all walks of life. The contribution that Durga Prasad Tewari made to social life will be remembered forever in the history of the liberation struggle of the people of Bangladesh.
This legendary leader was born on August 20, 1931, in Deshwali Para, Durgapur Municipality. He breathed his last at his residence on January 31, 2024, due to old age.
