The study shows that although there are 38 types of cancer in the country, lung cancer (11.41% of deaths), throat cancer (8.51% of deaths), and stomach cancer (5.71% of deaths) are the leading causes of death.
The study also found that there was a cancer prevalence of 106 per 100,000 people (118 per 100,000 for men and 96 per 100,000 for women).
This information was presented at a program at the BSMMU Super Specialized Hospital in the capital on Saturday.
Md. Khalequzzaman, the lead scientific researcher of the study and assistant professor of the Department of Public Health and Informatics of BSMMU, presented the results of the study.
The study was conducted in the Hossainpur Upazila area of Kishoreganj, where data collection began in July 2023. Researchers visited each household and conducted interviews using the National Cancer Registry software. A follow-up was conducted from July 1, 2024, to January 14, 2025, in which 58,539 people from 3,411 households participated.
