
Members of the joint force arrested three extortionists along with Tk 10,940 in extortion money illegally collected from vehicle drivers from battery-powered easy bikes and auto rickshaws on the Sherpur-Dhaka highway in Boyra Paranpur area of Sadar upazila of Sherpur district on Thursday, January 30 at around 12:30 pm.
The arrested extortionists are Mohammad Imam Hossain (34), son of Abdur Rashid of Madhya Boyra village in Sherpur Sadar upazila, Mohammad Babul Mia (20), son of Mohammad Mozaffar Hossain of Paschimpara village, and Md. Jahidul Islam (31), son of Mohammad Nabir Uddin of Khunua village in the same upazila.
According to police sources, based on a secret tip-off, members of the Bangladesh Army's Sherpur Army Camp and police from Sadar Police Station arrested three extortionists on Thursday afternoon on the Sherpur-Dhaka Highway in Boyra Paranpur area of Sadar Upazila while they were collecting extortion of Tk 300 at a time and Tk 100 per month from battery-powered easy bikes and auto-rickshaws. Later, Tk 10,940 of the extortion collected from the arrested people was recovered. In this incident, the three extortionists were handed over to Sherpur Sadar Police Station by the joint force members.
It is learned that for a long time, tolls had been illegally collected from battery-powered easy bikes and auto-rickshaws traveling on that road.
Legal action is underway at Sherpur Sadar Police Station in this regard.
