Sangram Online: Japan has promised to continue trade, commerce and development cooperation in Bangladesh and provide support for important activities undertaken by the interim government.
The new Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Saida Shinichi, made the commitment during a meeting with Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Thursday.
"We are determined to continue our business in Bangladesh. We will not only continue, but also expand further," Ambassador Saida Shinichi told the Chief Advisor.
Principal Advisor Professor Yunus said, 'Japan is a very important strategic partner country for Bangladesh and my government is keen to further strengthen this relationship.'
He also said, 'We are proud of Bangladesh's relations with Japan, as Japan is one of our closest friends and a major development partner country.'
Japan is Bangladesh's single largest bilateral development partner, playing a significant role in Bangladesh's socio-economic progress for many years.
Currently, bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Japan is around four billion US dollars, with Japan being one of Bangladesh's top five export destinations.
Currently, more than 350 Japanese companies are operating in Bangladesh.
Professor Yunus said that Bangladesh is now looking for business opportunities in SAARC and ASEAN countries, including Japan, and in countries in the East and West.
He said, "We are trying to build friendly relations with countries in the West and the East. Now is the time to do business."
Ambassador Saida Shinichi pledged to continue cooperation in major ongoing projects funded by the Japanese government, especially the Matarbari Deep Sea Port, Matarbari Coal-fired Power Plant, Dhaka Metro Rail, and the third terminal project of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Professor Yunus expressed gratitude for Japan's continued support for the Rohingya and sought Japan's cooperation in finding a permanent solution to this crisis for the safe, sustainable, and dignified return of the Rohingya.
