The much-awaited political party of the students and the public, the National Citizen Party (NCP), was launched last Friday (February 28). Lakhs of well-wishers from all over the country attended the party's launch ceremony in front of the National Parliament Building on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital. The party was launched shortly after evening with Nahid Islam as the convener and Akhtar Hossain as the member secretary.
The NCP announced a full-fledged convening committee with 216 members on Saturday night (March 1), the day after its debut. Nazmul Hasan Sohag of Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha and Fihadur Rahman Dibs of Khankah Sharif area of Gaibandha Municipality have been named as the organizer (northern region) and Fihadur Rahman Dibs as a member of the committee.
The anti-discrimination student movement was formed in July 1924, centered on the movement for quota reform in government jobs. Then, the National Citizens Committee was formed in September with citizens who were not students. The joint initiative of these two independent organizations later formed the political party of the people's interest and love, the National Citizens Party (NCP).
Nazmul Hasan Sohag, from Islampur village in Dhaperhat Union, passed his SSC from Biam Model School and College, Bogra in 2009 and his HSC from Cantonment Public School and College, Rangpur in 2011. He then enrolled in Dhaka University in the 2012-13 session. After completing his Honours and Masters there, he is currently studying in the M. Phil. program (research).
Nazmul Hasan Sohag was the joint convener of the Bangladesh General Student Rights Protection Council, which was formed around the 2018 quota reform movement. He was a consultant for the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement and a member of the central committee of the National Citizens Committee. After the formation of the National Citizens Committee, under the leadership of Nazmul Hasan Sohag and Mahmud Mottakim Mandal, the National Citizens Committee expanded to seven upazilas in Gaibandha, receiving central instructions.
He was also involved in the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) Dhaka University Contingent Cadet Under Officer (CUO) and Bangladesh Scouts. He is the central executive member of Gaibandha of the social organization Bhalobasho Samiti in Dhaka and the education and research secretary of Sadullapur Upazila Samiti in Dhaka. He was a frontline fighter in many movements including the quota reform movement, the safe road movement. He was also a victim of torture.
Fihadur Rahman Dibs of Khankah Sharif area of Gaibandha Municipality passed his SSC in 2014 from Ahmed Uddin Shah Shishu Niketan School and College, a renowned educational institution in Gaibandha district town, and his HSC in 2016 from Cantonment Public School and College, Rangpur. Then, he enrolled in the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University in the 2016-17 session and completed his Honours. Fihadur Rahman Dibs participated in the 24th mass uprising in Dhaka and the 4th August movement in Gaibandha. He became a familiar face to everyone on 5th August and later. Fihadur Rahman Dibs, along with a few others, continued to raise demands for various programs for the development of the district, including a fair-priced public market, standing by those killed and injured in the mass uprising, meeting seven-point demands including resolving the manpower and bed crisis at Gaibandha General Hospital, distributing relief and winter clothes to help flood victims, and deploying student representatives for security at several locations during Durga Puja.
