Australia and South Africa are in a strange situation ahead of the Champions Trophy semi-finals. Both teams have flown to Dubai, but it is not certain whether they will play their semi-final matches there or not! India's decision not to play in Pakistan has created chaos over the venue of the semi-final, leaving both teams facing an uncertain journey.
According to the ICC schedule, the first semi-final is scheduled to be held in Dubai on Tuesday and the second in Lahore on Wednesday. However, the fixtures depend on the result of India's final group match. As a result, even if Australia and South Africa are sent to Dubai early, they may have to return to Pakistan within 24 hours!
According to a BBC report, Australia will fly to Dubai on a three-hour flight from Lahore on Saturday, but if they do not play India, they may have to return to Pakistan on Monday. South Africa will also fly to Dubai on Sunday, but they also risk having to return to Lahore.
South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen put it bluntly, "Being in the same place, staying in the same hotel, playing and practicing on the same field is definitely a big advantage. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand that."
Criticism is mounting over the chaotic nature of the schedule, especially when it appears that India is playing all its matches in Dubai and is enjoying a major advantage, while other teams are facing disruptions in their preparations due to uncertain travel arrangements.
The semi-final excitement is at its peak, but the biggest question now is who will be India's opponent? India's match against New Zealand will not only decide their opponent, but also determine who between Australia and South Africa will return to Pakistan!
The ICC's impartiality has also been questioned by the creation of separate rules for India. The Champions Trophy, a stage of cricketing excellence, has now become a drama of chaotic travel schedules.
