Humayun Kabir Miraj: The prices of daily necessities have increased in the Bagh Anchra market of Sharsha, Jessore, before the holy month of Ramadan. As a result, the middle-class and low-income people are in extreme trouble. Complaints from ordinary buyers! Due to the lack of regular market monitoring by the Consumer Affairs Department or the Upazila Administration, some unscrupulous traders are destabilizing the daily necessities market ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
A visit to the Bagh Anchara market on Saturday (March 1) showed that the prices of beef, chicken, fish, lemon, cucumber, brinjal, potato, and ripe banana have increased. In the past week, the price has increased by 10 to 20 taka per kg. In the market, cut broiler chicken was sold at 240 to 260 taka per kg and whole golden chicken at 290 to 320 taka per kg. In addition, beef was sold at 740 to 780 taka per kg, which is 30 to 40 taka per kg more than last week.
On the other hand, the picture in the ripe banana market was the opposite. Last week, the price of Matman bananas was 40 to 45 taka per kilogram, but on Saturday, those bananas were being sold for 100 taka, while the price of Sagar bananas was 30 taka, but now it is 70 to 80 taka.
A shopper named Abdul Matin said that there is no price list in any shop. The prices of daily necessities are increasing every day. There is a wide price difference in the fish, meat and raw market. Some traders are trying to create an artificial crisis by increasing the stock of products. Jaggery, patali and food are being sold in an unclean environment, most of the fish, meat and food are infested with flies, which is a risk to public health.
Sharsha Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Najib Hasan said that there is no scope to increase the prices of daily necessities by targeting the month of Ramadan, adding that the campaign to control the market will continue from tomorrow.
