Election Commissioner Md. Anwar Islam Sarkar said that preparations for holding the national parliamentary elections are progressing rapidly. He said that the commission is working with the aim of holding the elections in December. However, it will take a year for local government elections, so the national elections are being given priority initially.
He said these things at a meeting in Munshiganj on Wednesday (February 26). The meeting was organized by the Munshiganj district administration regarding the updating of the voter list. Deputy Commissioner Fatematul Jannat, Superintendent of Police Shamsul Alam Sarkar and other administrative officials were present in the meeting.
Preparations ahead of the national elections
EC Anwar Islam said that all preparations are being completed for the December elections. He said, "We are ready and hope to be able to hold the elections in December. The Chief Advisor announced on December 16 that the elections can be held by December or by June 2026. If some reforms are made, then the elections will be held in December, otherwise in case of major reforms, the elections will be completed by June next year." He added that the Election Commission will take a decision based on a review of the administrative and law and order situation.
Local government election deadline
Regarding the local government elections, he said, "It takes about a year for the elections to the city corporation, municipality, union parishad and district parishad. So we will take a decision on this only after the national elections." He said that the law and order situation is being analyzed by visiting different districts and it is expected to improve further in the next two to three months.
Seating Arrangement and Legal Amendments
Regarding the seat allocation, he said, "Currently, we have about 400 applications pending. To resolve these applications, the existing delimitation law will have to be amended. We have already taken the initiative to amend the law and once the amendment is completed, the work related to seat allocation will be taken forward."
District and upazila level election officials participated in this exchange of views and discussed various aspects of the upcoming elections. The administration hopes that with proper preparation and planning, it will be possible to complete the elections on time.
