Sharsha Representative:
Two BNP leaders were beaten and seriously injured in a clash over dominance in Agrabhulot Bazar of Goga Union in Sharsha Upazila of Jessore. There have been allegations of bomb blasts and gunfire to create panic.
The clash took place around 10pm on Monday (February 24). The injured are former BNP ward president of Goga Union Atiar Rahman (58) and Shafiqul Islam (58). Locals rescued them and admitted them to Jessore Sadar Hospital.
Information investigation revealed that there had been a long-standing dispute between Goga Union BNP General Secretary Abdul Hamid Sardar and Vice President Sarwar Hossain over dominance. Due to this, on Monday night, 10-12 people including Sarwar Hossain's supporters Babul (48), Mikail Hossain (28) and Kabinur, found Hamid Sardar's supporter Atiar Rahman alone and beat him up. As a result, his knee bone was broken.
At that time, Shafiqul Islam was also severely beaten when he tried to save Atiyar Rahman. The attackers exploded a bomb and fired several rounds of bullets, creating panic in the area and quickly left the place.
Upon receiving the information, Sharsha police reached the spot and brought the situation under control by dispersing the agitated crowd. On Tuesday morning, locals recovered a fresh bomb and bullet shells from the market.
Sharsha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Islam said that police have been deployed in the area since the incident and the situation is normal. He said that legal action will be taken if the families of the injured receive a complaint.
The incident has caused panic in the area, but police have assured that appropriate action will be taken against the culprits.
