Two passenger buses collided head-on on the Madanpur-Dirai regional road in Sunamganj. At least 20 passengers were injured. One driver was seriously injured. The collision took place in front of the house of UP member Chaifuzzaman of Gagli village in Joykals union of Shantiganj upazila at 2 pm on Sunday.
Although the names of the injured were not immediately known, the locals rescued them and sent them to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. The driver, Alim Uddin (30), was sent to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet by the Shantiganj Fire Service in a critical condition. Alim Uddin is the son of Jalil Mia of Madanpur village in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila. The names of the other injured could not be known as they were rushed to the hospital.
Chaifuzzaman, a member of ward no. 9 of Joycalls Union, said, "This incident happened in front of my house. A National Enterprise passenger bus (Dhaka Metro B 15-6110) heading from Dirai to Sylhet hit and threw a moving motorcycle at the Gagli-Narainpur point on the road. So, the driver was driving at high speed to escape the onslaught of the people. Another passenger bus of Gatelock Service named Al-Maria Paribahan (Sylhet J 11-0776) was going to Dirai from the opposite direction. As the road was slippery due to rain, Al-Maria Paribahan was going very slowly on its designated route.
After coming in front of my house, National Enterprise lost control and pushed Al-Maria Paribahan hard. Immediately, the Al-Maria Paribahan bus overturned. About 20/22 people from both buses were injured. The majority of the injured were the passengers of Al-Maria Paribahan. With everyone's help, we immediately sent the injured to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. Only the driver of Al-Maria Paribahan could not be pulled out. After the fire service arrived, the car was cut open and he was pulled out. Seeing his condition as critical, the driver was sent to Sylhet.
Shantiganj Fire Service In-charge Md. Alamgir Hossain said, "As soon as we received the news, we reached the spot and rescued the seriously injured driver Alim Uddin, whose leg was stuck, and sent him to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet. We did not find the other injured. The locals sent them to the hospital. The cars have been removed from the road."
