Police have arrested Dulal Hossain (35), information and research secretary of the Saidpur Upazila Krishak League, and Md. Hanif (30), an Awami League activist, in a case filed with the police station on charges of sabotage during the July-August mass uprising. They were arrested from the Islambagh Chini Mosque area of Saidpur town in the early hours of Saturday (February 22). Earlier, another municipal ward Awami League activist named Mujahidul Islam (48) Moja was also arrested from his house in the Nayatola area of the city at 3:30 am on Friday (February 21).
It is known that during the July-August uprising, on August 4, the attack, vandalism, arson and sabotage on the BNP office on Shaheed Dr. Zikarul Haque Road in the city, and the general secretary of the Saidpur Municipality BNP, Sheikh Ashiqur Rahman Bablu, filed a case with the police station on August 31 of that year, naming 90 people and accusing unknown people. Case No. 20.
In that case, Awami League activist Hanif, son of the late Mozaffar Hossain of the city's Islambagh area, is the 43rd accused. In addition, the suspect found in the investigation of the case is Dulal Hossain, information and research secretary of the Saidpur Upazila Awami League, son of Momtaz Hesen of the same area. Mujahidul Islam Moja is the son of the late Kawsar Ali of the Nayatola area and an Awami League activist of Ward No. 4 of the municipality. He is also the 61st accused in the same case.
Saidpur Police Station Sub-Inspector and investigating officer of the case, Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique, said that they had been in hiding for a long time since the case. Late on Friday night, the police learned through secret information that the accused were staying at their respective homes.
Based on such information, the Golahat police outpost in-charge Police Inspector Khorshed Alam, along with Sub-Inspector Abu Bakkar Siddique, surrounded the house of the accused to arrest them. Later, after confirming their location, they were arrested from the bedroom of Hanif and Dulal in the morning under Operation Devil Hunt. Earlier, Syedpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Akhtar Hossain conducted a raid and arrested Mujahidul Islam. The police sent them to Nilphamari Jail on Saturday morning.
Although the main accused have been in hiding since the case was filed, the aforementioned accused have been walking around in public. When this drew widespread criticism, the police rushed to arrest the accused.
When asked about this, Saidpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Faim Uddin confirmed the arrest of the accused and said they have been sent to jail. He said that raids are being conducted in different areas every day to arrest other accused in the case.
Meanwhile, the Syedpur Police Station has also arrested 6 accused in various cases in the last 2 days by conducting a drive. They are Abdur Razzak (55), son of Azizar Rahman of Paschim Belpukur Kabiraj Para in Kashiram Belpukur Union of the upazila. Murad (35) and Motaleb (48), sons of the deceased Abbas Ali of Shashakandar Kutipara in Botlagari Union, and Korban Ali (48), son of Moyez Uddin, and Md. Sirajul (32), son of Kashim of Khatamdhupur Union. The arrested persons are convicted in various cases.
