An elderly passenger died after her saree got entangled in the wheels of a rickshaw-van in Nilphamari's Saidpur. The accident occurred in front of Sohel Rana Hotel, Panchmatha intersection, the heart of the city, around 1 pm on Saturday (February 22).
The deceased was identified as Rukhsana Akhtar (55). She is the wife of Muktar Rang Mistri of Hatikhana Camp in the city.
Eyewitnesses said that Rukhsana was going to the market in a battery-powered rickshaw-van. When she reached the Panchmatha intersection, the hem of her saree got caught in the wheels of the van. As a result, she fell from the van onto the road. Later, people rescued her and took her to the Syedpur 100-bed hospital. The doctor on duty there declared her dead.
But family members say that she had been suffering from diabetes for a long time. Due to high blood sugar, she lost consciousness and fell from the van onto the road. There was no incident of her saree or veil getting caught on the wheels of the van. She died due to illness.
Saidpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Akhtar Hossain said, "We have received information about the accident. However, we have not received any written complaint. The family members have taken the body home from the hospital."
