Police have arrested Jahangir Alam Jalu (50), joint convener of the Upazila Jubo League, in connection with the attack on anti-discrimination student protesters in Ghoraghat, Dinajpur.
He was arrested in a raid in the Raniganj Bazar area of the upazila at 10 pm on Thursday (February 20).
The arrested Jahangir Alam is the son of Abdul Latif Pradhan of the Velain area of Bulakipur Union in Jalu Upazila.
It is learnt that on August 4 last year, leaders and activists of Awami League branches and affiliates attacked a peaceful gathering of students and the public at the bus stand in the city. At that time, vehicles were vandalized, motorcycles and shops were set on fire, and several petrol bombs were detonated to create panic. Several people were seriously injured in the attack. A case was filed at the police station on August 24 last year, naming 40 people, including unknown people, and 70-80 others as accused.
Confirming the matter, Ghoraghat Police Station OC Nazmul Haque said, "The arrested person is accused of attacking, vandalizing, arson and petrol bomb attacks on protesters during the anti-discrimination student movement. They have been arrested in this case."
He also said that the arrested accused will be handed over to the court on Thursday (February 21).
