Sherpur police rescued a two-and-a-half-month-old baby from Tangail district headquarters early Wednesday morning, three days after he was stolen and sold in Sherpur.
At that time, Sherpur Sadar Police arrested one of the four members of a gang involved in the theft and sale of children.
Three other absconding members are involved in the incident. The arrested member is Zarina (48), wife of Izzat Ali of Lachmanpur village in Sadar upazila. The other three absconding members are Zarina's daughter Sabina (28), Sultan Mia (45) of Kamarerchar village in Sadar upazila and Sanowara Khanam (30), wife of Emdadul Haque of Tangail Sadar.
According to police sources, Tania Akhter and Latifur Rahman of Kuladi village in Nakla upazila brought their two-and-a-half-month-old daughter Labiba to a safe clinic in the Battala area of Sherpur town for treatment on February 15 afternoon. At that clinic, Zarina, a member of a previously known child thief gang, fooled the child's mother, stole the child with the help of her daughter Sabina, and sold it to a childless couple in Tangail district headquarters for 185,000 taka.
After receiving a complaint after the incident, Sherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zubaidul Alam led by case investigation officer Abu Sayeed conducted a raid and rescued the child Labiba based on a confession from the arrested accused from a house in Tangail district sadar.
In this incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, OC Mohammad Zubaidul Alam, said that a case has been filed in this regard. The arrested accused has been sent to court. Efforts are underway to arrest the rest.
