Joypurhat District Representative:
A Muslim woman named Mili Akhter (25) has been on a hunger strike at her boyfriend's house in Kenduli Majhipara village of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila, demanding marriage. She continued her hunger strike from noon to 9 pm on Monday (February 17). However, her boyfriend Ratan (25) is absconding. A case has been filed with Sadar Police Station in this incident.
According to local sources, Mili, daughter of Abdul Matin, a resident of Fulharnama village in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha, got married to Mahfuz, son of Abdul Jalil Mandal of Rahmatpur village in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat, in 2020. They have a three-year-old daughter. Mili had been in a marital dispute with her husband Mahfuz for some time.
Meanwhile, due to living in the same village, Mili developed a love affair with Ratan, the son of Shri Sushil Das, a year and a half ago. Their marital relationship deteriorated further after her husband found a love letter. Finally, Mili left her husband and child and went to her lover Ratan's house and started a hunger strike demanding marriage.
However, Ratan was not found at home and his mobile phone was found switched off. Upon receiving the information, Joypurhat Sadar Police Station went to the spot and rescued Mili and brought her to the police station.
Joypurhat Sadar Police Station OC Nur Alam Siddique said, "The police went there based on the news that a Muslim woman was on a hunger strike at a Hindu man's house demanding marriage. Later, when the victim sought legal assistance, she was taken into police custody. We have received a written complaint and further legal action will be taken."
